Vero Beach High School improves to 5-1 with 24-7 victory over South Fork

STUART — Vero Beach High school special teams and defense accounted for 14 first-half points Friday night en route to a 24-7 triumph over South Fork High School.The Indians improved to 5-1 with the victory and ensured its fourth straight winning season. Vero Beach advances to face 1-5 Centennial High School at South County High School next Friday. Vero Beach moved to a 7-0 lead with just seven seconds left in the first quarter when Austin Carter returned a blocked field goal attempt 77 yards for the first score. The Indians then jumped to a 14-0 advantage with 8:23 left in the second quarter as Lars Koht returned a fumble recovery 43 yards for a touchdown.Jormonte Hunter capped the Indians’ next scoring drive with a 1-yard burst with 3:52 left in the second quarter to put Vero Beach up 21-0 at halftime. Hunter ended the night with 70 yards on 13 carries. He needs just 81 yards to reach 2,000 in his high school career.The Indians went up 24-0 with 6 seconds left in the third quarter on an 18-yard field goal by Karson Dietrich. That score capped a 97-yard drive by Vero Beach that ran off over 7 minutes in the period. South Fork capped the scoring on Dalton Pollock’s 5-yard run with 3:03 left in the game to account for the final score. Cody Labanowitz had 15 carries for 80 yards for South Fork and Pollock ended the night with 79 yards on 15 carries.The Indians improved to 12-2 against South Fork.
