Chill out at ice cream fundraiser this Saturday

VERO BEACH — Have a “pawsitively” delicious time this Saturday, October 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. as Kilwin’s Ice Cream hosts “Ice Cream, You Scream,” a pre-Halloween fundraiser for The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVB & IRC).

Kilwin’s will be donating a portion of the day’s proceeds from sales of their ice cream and chocolate to the Humane Society and will also be hosting free “Best Adult, Child and Pet Costume” contests for guests and their four-legged friends.

Humane Society staff and volunteers will also be on hand to answer questions and provide information about the shelter’s animal protection and care services.

Kilwin’s is located at 3001 Ocean Drive, Vero Beach, across from Humiston Park.

Shelters to open Wednesday ahead of Hurricane Nicole

The Indian River County Emergency Services Department will open three shelters on Wednesday as Hurricane Nicole moves closer to Florida's east coast, according to the School District of Indian River County. Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association recently released its monthly report for the beaches at Jaycee Park, Humiston Park and South Beach Park. Lifeguards said about 54,105 beachgoers flocked to the shore in January. The highest beach-attendance record of 65,700 was set in 2019 for Vero Beach, lifeguards said. Protective measures in place at shelters

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Cheryl Denapoli scanned the science books in a biology classroom Saturday at the Freshman Learning Center, hoping to find something interesting to read to pass the time. Denapoli, 71, Vero Beach, brought the book "Suspect," written by Michael Robotham, to also read during her brief stay at the center. The fiction thriller details a story about renowned psychologist Joseph O'Loughlin, who gets called in to a high-profile murder investigation. "I'm an avid reader," said Denapoli, an evacuee at the Freshman Learning Center, which was turned into an emergency shelter ahead of Tropical Storm Isaias.
