Commissioners to consider extending free rent to café

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Daily Dose Café, located in the Indian River County Administration Complex, could continue to operate without paying rent to the county.

The Board of County Commissioners are being asked to consider waiving the rent for the café for another year, as well as decrease the café’s security deposit. For the last six months, café operator Julie Anderson has been running Daily Dose Café without rent, under the same terms and conditions and the previous operator.

Those terms expired Sept. 30.

Anderson has reached out to the county, expressing concern that she would not be able to pay the rent for the small eatery, due to not bringing in enough money.

“Ms. Anderson reported that due to the poor economy, her receipts are not sufficient to support a rent payment at this time,” county records state.

According to those records, the county’s budget office has reviewed Anderson’s financial data and has confirmed that “the cafe does not currently produce enough income to support a rent payment.”

Anderson is also asking the county to reconsider the required $1,200 security deposit she must provide.

Under the current lease agreement, the county would hold the $1,200 security deposit in escrow and return it to Anderson at the end of the lease, which is Sept. 30, 2012.

Anderson has told county officials that she cannot afford the deposit and would like to have it decreased or waived.

County staff recommends that the deposit be decreased to $500 and to waive the monthly rent until Sept. 30, 2011.

The Board of Indian River County Commissioners is expected to discuss the lease changes Tuesday at the regular meeting, which begins at 9 a.m.
