Take the Team Fox Cupcake Challenge

VERO BEACH — Preheat your ovens and get your mixers ready for the Team Fox Cupcake Challenge.  Sisters Judy Graves and Janie Graves Hoover are hosting a cupcake bakeoff on Friday, October 8 at the Heritage Center to raise money for The Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Bakers will compete in three divisions; Professional Baker or Restaurant, Individual Bakers and Corporate Team.  The fee to enter the competition is $5 and contestants are to bring five dozen cupcakes made with standard 2 ½” cupcake papers and all decorations must be edible.  One dozen cupcakes will be displayed and the rest of the cupcakes will be cut into bite sized pieces for tasting by attendees.

Tickets to the Cupcake Challenge are $10 and can be purchased at the door.  Ticket holders will have 10 votes to use – all for their favorite cupcake or for several different ones that they like.  Cupcakes will be tasted by the ticketholders between 6:30 and 7:30 pm and audience votes will be counted between 7:30 and 8:00 pm.  The cupcakes with the most audience votes will go to the judges for the prize categories. Winners will be announced as soon after 8:30 pm as the judges’ votes are tallied.

There will be an awards given for Best Taste, Best Frosting and Best Decoration, and one cupcake will be awarded Team Fox’s Best Overall Cupcake 2010.

Cupcake bakers are asked to submit a brief (75 words or less) paragraph about themselves, the team or company, bakery or restaurant that can be used for Cupcake Challenge publicity purposes.

Checks for the $5 entry fee can be made out to Michael J. Fox Foundation.  Deadline for completed entry form (call 772 473 3410 to have an entry form e-mailed to you) is Tuesday, October 5.  The form, contestant information and entry fee may be dropped off at Graves Hill and Colton, 1416 19th Place, Vero Beach, FL or mailed to Cupcake Challenge, Care of HGX, PO Box 6190, Vero Beach, FL 32961.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensure the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson’s.  Team Fox (www.TeamFox.org) raises funds for the foundation through local fundraisers and participating in sporting events.  Judy Graves and Janie Hoover are running the New York City Marathon with Team Fox on November 7 and have pledged to raise a total of $5000 for Team Fox in 2010.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
