14th Ave. reopens after apartment fire near Freshman Learning Center

VERO BEACH — Fourteenth Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets has reopened sooner than emergency responders expected.

One fire engine will remain on scene, while the others have been released, Assistant Chief Brian Burkeen said.

Indian River County Fire Rescue responded to an apartment fire at the 1800 block of 14th Avenue, directly behind the Vero Beach High School Freshman Learning Center shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday.

The fire was contained to one unit and has since been extinguished, according to  Burkeen.

No one was in the unit when the fire broke out and the cause for the blaze remains under investigation.

Burkeen said that emergency crews expect to wrap up the scene shortly so as to not interfere with school traffic. Emergency vehicles had been parked in the Freshman Learning Center parking lot.

Originally reported Thursday at 1:21 p.m.
