Stellar students receive awards

VERO BEACH — Youth Guidance students who received straight A’s were celebrated with a luncheon at the Community Church during the Chris Beecher Memorial Award Ceremony on August 17.  The Exchange Club of Vero Beach sponsors this annual event to honor the late Chris Beecher, who was a Youth Guidance mentor and an active member of Exchange, and to recognize students for their exceptional grades.

The ten Youth Guidance youngsters who received straight A’s were treated to a luncheon and award reception and were presented with a $50 check.  After receiving their checks, several students announced that they would deposit the money in their ‘college fund’.

The Exchange Club has been awarding children since the mid-90s and has been a great support to Youth Guidance.  These ten and other youth in the program were also recognized for their good (straight A’s or A/B honor roll) and/or improved grades at the annual Good Grades Pool Party the previous weekend.

The primary purpose of Youth Guidance is to match each of its nearly 700 at-risk K-12 grade children with a volunteer mentor 21 years or older.  Mentors spend just a few hours a week in friendship based activities that they both enjoy.  The agency is actively seeking volunteers to serve as mentors, tutors, or periodic volunteers at ongoing activities for the unmatched children in the program, or to provide regular help in the office.
