Artist Dawn Miller launches Specialized Workshops and Open Studios

VERO BEACH — Dawn E. Miller, award-winning pastel artist and poplar Vero Beach art teacher, is presenting a new series of specialty workshops focusing on intensive instruction in particular areas of pastel painting. WORKSHOPS:  The first workshop, slated for Saturday, September 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will be a fun and information-filled, event focusing on Getting to Know Pastels (Pastels 101).  Welcoming both novices and artists from other disciplines, Miller will dispel some of the myths surrounding pastels including the one about their being a messy and unforgiving medium. Dawn offers time-tested, easy-to-follow instruction and tips on how best to work within this color-rich, accommodating medium while using minimal materials.  Cost: $100 per person.

The second workshop, Luminous Pastel Landscapes, takes place on Saturday, September 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, September 19, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. In this workshop, Miller offers techniques for creating luminous lighting effects in pastel paintings.  Topics range from how to select the optimal reference photo, to altering the color, value and temperature of a painting to rev up its radiance quotient. Some experience with pastels is helpful.

Cost: $150 per person.  In the coming months, Miller will offer a variety of other specialty Workshops including Pastel Portraits, Kids in Pastel, Water & Waves, and Cloudscapes.

SUNDAY OPEN STUDIOS:  Artists and students developing their own pastel projects, receive intensive one-on-one instruction in Miller’s Open Studios.  Open Studios will be held on Sundays, September 12 and September 26 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.  During each Studio, Dawn works closely to ensure that each student’s project is the best it can be.  Cost: $25 per person.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
