Music Academy to host open house at new location

VERO BEACH — The Academy for the Performing Arts has moved to the campus of the First Baptist Church, 2206 16th Avenue in Vero Beach.  The public is invited to an Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 13 in the Family Life Center to tour the facility and to receive information about classes and instructors in piano, voice, guitar, brass, woodwinds, drum and percussion.

There will be an instrument “petting zoo,” a raffle for one semester of free lessons, door prizes, refreshments, and an opportunity to register for the fall semester which begins August 30th.

This year the Academy will also offer Newly Expanded Drum and Percussion Program – classes designed for the younger musicians.

The Academy, celebrating its 16th year, offers both private and group lessons at reasonable rates from trained, professional instructors.  Classes fill up quickly.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
