John Addison Clawson, 88, Vero Beach

John Addison Clawson, 88, of Vero Beach died June 14, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Harmon Clawson and son, Hunter Winnett Clawson. He is survived by his daughter, Christine Clawson of Cincinnati; his daughter-in-law Christy Herndon Clawson of Greenville, S.C. and six grandchildren; John Alan Higgs of Chicago, Kristian Deane Higgs of Cincinnati, Blake Addison Higgs of Cincinnati, Hunter Winnett Clawson, Jr., of Greenville, Chelsea Hunter Brandewie of Cincinnati and Cody Christopher Clawson of Greenville.

Successful businessman, naval officer and natural leader, Jack Clawson was born in Rochester, Pa., on June 4, 1922. He received a BS degree in 1943 and an honorary Bachelor of Laws degree in 1979 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

He became Vice President of the National Business and Labor Reports Division of Prentice-Hall, NYC, 1948-1955 and spent 25 years with DuBois Chemical, a division of Chemed Corp., Cincinnati, including serving as President and CEO, 1970-1979. He was also Chairman of Whitehall Management Corporation, Cincinnati, on the Board of Directors of Suburban Federal Savings and Loan Association, Chairman and CEO of the Soap & Detergent Association and member of Corporate Directorship, Trustee of the Providence Hospital, member of the Dean’s Association, Miami University and member of Delta Sigma Phi and Sigma Alpha Episilon.

He was also Commodore and long time member of Cat Cay Yacht Club (Bahamas), John’s Island Club (Vero Beach), Kenwood Country Club (Cincinnati), Queen City Club (Cincinnati) and Sapphire Valley Country Club (Cashiers, N.C.).

Jack patriotically served under Admiral Halsey in the Pacific Theater during W.W.II as Lt. (J.G.) on an infantry gunboat around Guadacanal, Solomon Islands April, 1944 to TS Gintao, North China, October, 1945.

He is especially grateful to Bonnie Alberga of Vero Beach who took exceptional care of him and his dogs.
