Louise Hurst Bass, 85, Vero Beach

Louise Hurst Bass, 85, of Vero Beach, died Friday, June 11, 2010, at Palm Garden of Vero Beach. Mrs. Bass was born Dec. 28, 1924, in Winter Beach and has been a lifelong resident. She worked for Deerfield Packing House for 44 years was a member of The First Church of God in Vero Beach.

Survivors include her sons Robert Bass of Rossville, Ga., and Joe Bass of Rossville, Ga.; daughters Rose Watson of Jacksonville, Frances Roe of Houston, Barbara Rice of Vero Beach, and Patty Bass-Cribbs of Callahan, Fla.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Bass, and twin infant boys.

The family will receive friends 4-7 p.m., Monday, June 14, 2010, at the Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Adult Day Care Center at the Senior Resource Center, 694 14th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960-5770.

Family, friends, marines honor ‘protector, hometown hero’

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Frank Strahorn was already considered a hero by his family, friends and marine brothers and sisters because of his military service around the world. Then, on June 19, the 34-year-old became a "hometown hero" after he was fatally shot while helping others escape a gunman carrying an AK-47 assault rifle at a Sebastian pizzeria.
