ALL PETS: 3 days is all it takes to make a difference

In just takes three days to learn how you can make a lifetime of difference for animals. Please believe me when I tell you that Indian River County’s animals need you.

That’s why we hope you’ll come on over to The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County this June, where we’ll be hosting a Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) training program. It’s the premier training for anyone who wants to learn how to help animals during a disaster.

The workshop starts on a Friday morning and ends on a Sunday afternoon. By the time you leave you’ll be familiar with the basics of helping animals before, during and after a disaster strikes.

The class is being taught by experts from The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and it’s a good mix of lectures, demonstrations and a bit of hands-on training, along with some group exercises that will get you thinking.

I’d like to assure you that this is a class that’s meant for everyone, so please don’t shy away if you’re concerned that it may be too physical.

You’ll learn very quickly there are many roles that disaster responders can play including photographing animals, answering questions from the public, helping match up lost and found animals, communications and more.

Once you’ve finished the class you can sign up as a disaster volunteer with our humane society and/or can also apply to participate in the HSUS National Animal Disaster Response Team (NDART).

Besides the materials, lunch and lovely certificate you’ll receive upon completion, another nice benefit of attending is the opportunity to make new friends who care about animals as much as you do.

The HSUS Disaster Animal Response Team training will be held at the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County, 6230 77th St., Vero Beach.

The course runs June 11-13 and costs $80.
