Planned Giving Council introduces new board

VERO BEACH — The Planned Giving Council of Indian River recently welcomed a new slate of officers and board of directors for 2010.  At the same time, the organization honored Kris Sarkauskas, CEO of the Mental Health Association for her service as president of the organization and many years on the board.

Newly elected officers are Richard Johnson (VNA & Hospice Foundation), President; Karen Deigl (Senior Resource Association), VP Program Development; Christopher Pegg (Gould, Cooksey, Fennell PA), VP Membership; James Davis (Seacoast National Bank), Treasurer; and Pam King (Childcare Resources), Secretary.  Board members include Todd Heckman (Estate Planning Advisors), William Kirk (Gould, Cooksey, Fennell PA), David Osgood (BNY Mellon Wealth Management), William Pomeroy (CapitalBase.com), Mary-Ruth Foley, Murray Fournie (Indian River Medical Center Foundation), Dennis Bartholomew (Sun-Up Center), and Michelle Malyn (United Way of Indian River County).

The Planned Giving Council provides educational and networking opportunities for its members who include area gift planning professionals and non-profit executives.

Officers pull man from burning home; two treated for smoke inhalation

SEBASTIAN — An officer and a resident were hospitalized for smoke inhalation after the officer helped pull the man from a burning trailer home filled with smoke, Sebastian police and fire rescue crews said. The blaze ignited about 3 a.m. Saturday in the kitchen at the residence in the 300 block of Valencia Street, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said. Upon arrival, police Sgt. Steve Marcinik saw heavy smoke coming from the back of the home, police Lieutenant Tim Wood said. A neighbor told Marcinik that resident Rodney Dyke was still inside. Humane Society advises pet owners to prepare for cold

VERO BEACH -- With Treasure Coast temperatures set to dramatically drop this evening and remain chilly throughout the week, the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is urging pet owners to protect their animals and offers the following tips: Bring pets indoors. If it's too cold for you, it's too cold for your pets. Even dogs with heavy fur coats should stay inside.
