Christopher Ekonomou, 86, Vero Beach

Christopher Ekonomou, 86, died April 15, 2010, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

He was born in Canton, Ohio, and lived in Vero Beach for 43 years, coming from Melbourne. He was a general building contractor.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner and a member of the Order of AHEPA and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Pierce.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Ekonomou of Vero Beach; and brother, Anthony Ekonomou of Brandon.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2525 S. 25th St., Fort Pierce, FL 34981.

No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach. A guest book may be signed at seawindsfh.com/obit.php.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. 11-year-old breaks into church, steals laptop on Christmas Day

GIFFORD — An 11-year-old who deputies said broke into a church and stole a laptop on Christmas Day, was detained. Deputies also arrested the boy's mother after saying she failed to report the boy as missing. The Gifford youth told deputies he stole the $700 laptop because "he wanted something to play with," reports show. Deputies said the juvenile was a runaway. An arrest report noted the incident took place at St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church, located just south of St. Peter's Academy. Both facilities have the same address at 4250 38th Avenue, Gifford. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life.
