Massive brush fire hits St. Lucie and Indian River counties

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A massive brush fire that started near the Spanish Lakes development in St. Lucie County has crossed into Indian River County, Fire Chief Brian Nolan said Monday.The blaze estimated to already have consumed as much as 100 acres crossed into Indian River County near 6th Avenue and 25th Street SW. In all, five fire engines are at the scene along with several brush fire units working with St. Lucie County and Division of Forestry fire fighters.Nolan said no structures in Indian River County were in immediate danger and there were no evacuation orders in effect. Some homes in Spanish Lakes have received evacuation orders.This story will be updated with more information as it becomes available.

County announces beach closures ahead of beach restoration project

At least two beaches will be closed starting this weekend ahead of the beach restoration project, which will start back up next week, county officials said. The project aims to restore sand - which had been washed away by storms and hurricanes over the years - at the beaches. Beach park access at Seagrape Trail Beach Access and Treasure Shores Park Beach will both close starting Friday, county officials said. No injuries after propane leak at VBHS

VERO BEACH — No injuries were reported after a propane gas leak at Vero Beach High School that led students to be briefly evacuated, sheriff's officials said. Indian River County sheriff's officials responded to reports of a leak in building 2 about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, spokesperson Debbie Carson said. The smell of propane gas lingered throughout the facility. Students in building 2 were evacuated to the Vero Beach Performing Arts Center, Carson said. Several Indian River County Fire Rescue trucks, AmeriGas and Como Oil & Propane responded to the scene. AmeriGas fixed the leak by 2 p.m., sheriff's officials said. Community Development Department closes in-person services

The Community Development Department closed in-person services Monday as county officials implement more health precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Officials plan to add more physical barriers to the front counters inside the building, which already has temperature scanners installed. County employees and those who visit county facilities are already required to wear masks inside. County Administrator Jason Brown was not immediately available to confirm reports that six employees in the Community Development Department tested positive for the virus.
