Airport Park in Sebastian ready for young plane enthusiasts

SEBASTIAN – Airport Park at the Sebastian Municipal Airport is nearly complete with just one item missing – a telescope viewer. However, the park is open and ready for use.

The fencing is in place, as are a few trees and three aircraft-shaped bouncers, which beckon to visiting children to use their imaginations and soar through the sky. There is also a covered picnic table.

The Sebastian City Council approved the $12,550 park in mid-January, at more than double the original estimate.

City Manager Al Minner told the council that his initial estimate of $3,000 to $5,000 included the bouncers only, not the fencing or landscaping or any other amenities.

The bulk of the added cost estimate came from the addition of a $4,000 telescope viewer, which Mayor Richard Gillmor requested be installed at the park. The viewer would allow park visitors to better see the skydivers at Skydive Sebastian landing in the drop zone.

The park is located between the airport administration building and the runways near the LoPresti hangar. There is access to restrooms through the administration building and parking nearby.
