Edward G. Tippin, 85, formerly of Vero Beach

Edward G. Tippin, 85, died March 15, 2010, at his home in Louisiana.

He was born in Vero Beach and was a member of Vero Beach High School Class of 1942. He served in the Navy in World War II.

He graduated from Springfield Lutheran Seminary, Springfield, Ill. Before retirement, he was an ordained Lutheran minister.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Louisiana; daughters, Ginny Joiner, Lynn Folse and Lisa Clayton, all of Louisiana; brothers, Jim of Boone, N.C., and Stan and John, both of Vero Beach; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be March 20 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Metairie, La. Arrangements were by Lakelawn Metairie Funeral Home and Cemeteries, New Orleans.

Man shot after charging at deputy with small sword

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 29-year-old man who was shot by a deputy after charging at the officer with a small sword, was hospitalized late Friday, officials said. The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. The deputy who fired the shot was not injured. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for police-involved shootings. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
