VERO BEACH —  The Saint Edward’s Theatre Department proudly presents Butterflies are Free by Leonard Gershe for two performances: Friday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts located at 1895 Saint Edward’s Drive and South A1A in Vero Beach.  Select theatre students of the senior class of 2010 have directed, designed, and will perform this award-winning romantic comedy.  For more information about the student involvement, please contact Jennifer Patty at (772) 492-2371 or jpatty@steds.org

Produced by Special Arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., the performances are the culmination of a year-long project for seniors Adam Koulish (Scenic Design/Actor), Jack Giampolo (Publicity Design/Actor) and Anna Rosato (Director/Actress).  Each of the aforementioned received a Superior ranking for their individual work at the Florida Thespians District Individuals Competition in January and will be representing Saint Edward’s School at the Florida Thespians State competition in Tampa, Florida, in April.

This Tony Award-winning play originally appeared on Broadway in 1969, but is remembered most by audiences as the Academy Award-winning, 1972 screen adaptation starring Eddie Albert, Goldie Hawn, and Eileen Heckart. Loosely based on the life of attorney Harold Krents, Butterflies are Free revolves around one pivotal day in the life of Don Baker, a young man, blind since birth, who moves into a Manhattan apartment to break away from his overprotective mother.   When a free-spirited girl moves in next door, sparks fly–until the man’s mother comes by to check up on him. His dreams of independence, his mother’s hopes for his future, and the girl’s immature view of interpersonal relationships all come to a head in one evening.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students.  Tickets are general admission and will be sold at the door the evening of the concert; Cash only at the box office, which opens a half-hour before each performance.   Recommended for ages 13 and older.
