Youth Guidance kids learn goal setting

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Seven 13-18 year olds and six adult volunteers attended a Goal Setting Workshop conducted by Katie Nall, Program Director, Indian River State College, and long-time friend of Youth Guidance. The participants learned how and why to set goals for themselves, define what they want to do, and plan the things they would like to change. The life skills seminar was held at the United Way Center on Saturday, September 12.

The primary purpose of the Youth Guidance Mentoring & Activities Program of IRC is to “match” each of its 700 at-risk K-12 children with a volunteer mentor seventeen years and older. Opportunities for members of the community to volunteer with Youth Guidance include becoming an ongoing mentor, serving as a one-time companion of a child at special events, or helping in the office on a regular basis. The monthly newsletter found at the Youth Guidance website, www.ircyouth.com, provides information about upcoming activities.

A new Youth Guidance program gives local businesses the opportunity to provide a hands-on workplace experience 3-6 hours per week for teenagers and nurture the future employees of Indian River County. In return, they will receive acknowledgement of their businesses in Youth Guidance publications, all at no cost to the business.

Donations of any amount are welcome now and throughout the year to support summer camp and other Youth Guidance programs, including cultural, educational and recreational opportunities, tutoring services, and college scholarships. The major fundraising event of the year, the 35th Annual Tropical Night Luau, will be held on June 5 from 7-11pm at Quail Valley.

Persons interested in learning more about mentoring a child, volunteering at Youth Guidance, attending the Tropical Night Luau, or donating to the Summer Camp and Activity Fund may visit the www.ircyouth.com website or call Barbara Schlitt Ford, Executive Director, at 772-770-5040 for further information.
