Marian T. Spengler, 92, Vero Beach

Marian T. Spengler, 92, died Feb. 12, 2010, at the Indian River Medical Center.

She was born in Akron, Ohio, and lived in Vero Beach since 1979, coming from San Jose, Calif.. She was a homemaker and a member of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara S. Hemme of Vero Beach, Carol Klintworth of Naples and Deborah Frank of Kelseyville, Calif.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Association, Treasure Coast Area, 3375 20th St., Suite 100, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

No services are planned.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said. GIFFORD — Anna Lee Lane took pride in working the voting polls for 25 years. For Lane, it was a personal understanding, as African-Americans overcame barriers over the years to secure voting rights and be seen as equal. "I was a concerned citizen," said Lane, who turned 100 Thursday. Lane volunteered at local voting polls, signing up residents for registration to ensure their voices would be heard.
