Thieves steal $6,000 in copper cables from Sebastian hospital

SEBASTIAN — The loss of 40 feet of copper cables valued at approximately $6,000 did not affect work at the Sebastian River Medical Center, according to hospital officials.

Two men were arrested Thursday, about 11 hours after authorities say they cut and removed nine copper cables and sold them to Mr. Scrap.

According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Chad Davis, 29, of Vero Beach, and Tommy Champ, 21, of Palm Bay, went to the Sebastian River Medical Center at 3 a.m. Feb. 4 and removed the cables.

The hospital reported the theft and notified area scrap yards about the cables. Mr. Scrap called the Sheriff’s Office when Davis and Champ brought the metal in to sell.

During the investigation, Davis admitted to stealing the cables, the arrest report states.

Both Davis and Champ are sitting in the county jail on $20,000 bond each and face felony charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property.
