Seaplane’s splash down in lagoon prompts calls of plane crash

SEBASTIAN — A seaplane that lost a pontoon and landed in the Indian River Lagoon near Sebastian did not crash land, authorities said Thursday afternoon. Reports started coming in shortly after 1 p.m.

Emergency crews responded to a reported plane crash into the Indian River Lagoon east of Capt. Hiram’s in Sebastian. However, Sebastian police officers who arrived on the scene by boat reported that the seaplane had lost a pontoon and landed in order to search for the part. All on board the seaplane were reported safe.

A body had been reported floating in the water, police dispatchers said at the time, but there has been nothing found.

The Sebastian Police Department and Indian River County Fire Rescue responded.
