Mildred L. Locke 97, Vero Beach

Mildred L. Locke 97, died Jan. 19, 2010 at Lifepath Hospice in Sun City Center, FL.

Born in Boston, she lived in Vero Beach for 54 years prior to moving to Riverview, Florida. Mrs. Locke was a bookkeeper for Russell Concrete for 30 years before her retirement.

She was a member of St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church.

She was also a member of the Vero Beach Country Club serving as President, Treasurer and on the Board of Directors. She was also a member of the Vero Beach Business and Professional Women’s Club and served as President and a member of the Indian River Medical Center Auxiliary since 1982.

She was predeceased by her husband William G. Locke, brothers Burton and Hibert Lightbody.

Memorial donations may be made to Lifepath Hospice, 3723 Upper Creek Blvd., Sun City Center, FL.

A visitation will be held 10:30 to 12:30 January 22, 2010 at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach. Graveside Service will be 1:30 pm Jan. 22, 2010 at Crestlawn Cemetery.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
