Lester Forman Sickels, 83, Vero Beach

Lester Forman Sickels, 83, died Dec. 23, 2009, at Atlantic Healthcare Center, Vero Beach.

He was born in Cleveland and lived in Vero Beach, coming from Hollywood. During World War II, he served as a sonar technician in the Navy. He was an electrician.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn of Vero Beach; daughters, Lynn A. Dwyer of Port St. Joe, Bonnie Quay of Streetsboro, Ohio, Deborah Gebo of Aurora, Ohio, and Marjorie Lynch of South Euclid, Ohio; sons, Lester E. Sickels of Bonifay and James Sickels of Kennewick, Wash.; sister, Ruth Cook of Vero Beach; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 23 at Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home, Vero Beach, with the Revs. Thomas Dwyer and Earl Sickels presiding. A guest book may be signed at seawindsfh.com/obit.php.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
