Vero Beach’s Mardy Fish and Jake Owen wow crowds

VERO BEACH — The fourth Mardy’s Tennis and Jake’s Music Festival started under grey skies Friday on the tennis court, but ended with a rousing concert by country singer Jake Owen. The benefit continues Saturday with barbecue luncheon and silent auction featuring sportscaster Brett Haber starting at noon and a singles tennis exhibition featuring Fish and top American player James Blake followed by a doubles competition at the Grand Harbor Golf & Beach Club beginning at 2:30 p.m. Fish and Owen are from Vero Beach and have been able to improve this holiday event each time over the last. Fish, who won his third ATP event this year in nearby Delray Beach, kicked things off with a tennis clinic for kids as part of his goal to give back to his community. The two-day event benefits the Mardy Fish Foundation which has helped support programs at the Pelican Island Elementray School, the Youth Guidance Foundation and Boys & Girls Club of Vero Beach. Owen, Fish’s childhood friend and named Top New Male Vocalist by the Acadamy of Country Music in March, filled the Performing Arts Center at Vero Beach High School with his concert performance.
