Boys & Girls Clubs Golf Tourney raises record amount

VERO BEACH — The Boys & Girls Clubs Golf Tourney, held in November at the Vero Beach Country Club is credited as being their most successful event in its eight year history.  The event raised record funds, which will be used to support the organization’s core program areas in education and career development; the arts; community service; character and leadership development; health and life skills; and sports, fitness and recreation. The event is unique in that it offers two tournaments – a morning Pro Am tournament with teams made up of one pro player and four amateurs and an afternoon tournament with teams of four amateur players.  The combined number of players, professional and amateur, was 187 this year.

The husband and wife team of John and Karla Spooner were event and silent auction chairs respectively.  George E. Warren was the major sponsor, Marquis Insurance and Publix Super Markets Charities were theme sponsors, and Vero Beach Chrysler Jeep Dodge was the hole in one sponsor.

In the Pro Am tournament, there was a total of 15 professionals representing nine different private golf clubs: Jackie Barenborg, Pointe West;  Justin Bartlett, Orchid Island; John Bierkin, Quail Valley; Pat Gorman, Bent Pine; Jayson Jeffries, RedStick;  Joe Kern, Indian River Club; Mike Kotnik, Orchid Island; Phil Leddy, Hawk’s Nest; Peter McDonald, RedStick; Don Meadows, Quail Valley; Larry Rinker, Riomar; Brett Stetmaiyer, Quail Valley; Nate Tyler,Quail Valley; Dan Venezio,John’s Island and Rich Waage, Orchid Island.

The Pro Am champion team was Pro Justin Bartlett with players Stan Orczyk, Angus Hewett, Bill Entringer, and Charlie Bridgers.

28 teams played in the afternoon and those winners were:

Men’s Division: Bill Winslwo, Bill Scully, Bob Baldwin; Nick Parks

Mixed Division: Bob and Becky Allen and Norm and Rita Miller

Ladies’ Division: Karla Spooner, Carol Corr, Kelly Donovan and Bea Marriott   {igallery 117}
