Edward Jackson, 90, Vero Beach

Edward Jackson, 90, of Vero Beach, died Nov. 12, 2009, at Indian River Medical Center. He was born in Gainesville and lived in Indian River County since 1936. He was employed in the lawn maintenance business with Dodgertown and was a member of St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the usher board. He also was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include his brother, David Jackson Jr. of Vero Beach; and sisters, Genieva Wanoa Dixon of Detroit, Rachel Jackson Pinkney of Vero Beach and Carolyn Elizabeth Franklin of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his brothers, George Earl Jackson, Peter C. Jackson and Albert Jackson. Arrangements were by Stone Brothers Funeral Chapel. Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations. Howle, Zudans win in Vero; Kinchen, McPartlan, Iovino in Sebastian

All results are in for the Vero Beach and Sebastian municipal elections. Voters have returned Harry Howle to the Vero Beach Council and Bob McPartlan and Linda Kinchen to the Sebastian Council. Val Zudans will join Howle on the Vero Council, while Albert Iovino will round out the last of three seats up for grabs on the Sebastian Council.
