Mom who left baby in SUV in Vero Beach to change plea

VERO BEACH — The mother of a 5-month-old infant who died in the back of her SUV while she worked all day is expected to change her not guilty plea today. Stephanie Ann Salvilla-Werking filed the not guilty plea at the end of September.

She faces charges of aggravated manslaughter and leaving a child unattended resulting in death.

What her plea change would be to has not been disclosed. Werking and her attorney, Andrew Metcalf, are scheduled to go before Judge Robert Pegg at 11:45 a.m. The court hearing is open to the public. Werking had filed a not guilty plea, which preserved her right to go to trial, according to Metcalf.

Metcalf has told VeroNews.com that he could not comment on whether or not there might be a plea deal in the works with the State Attorney’s Office.

Salvilla-Werking, of Sebastian, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter after her son, 5-month-old Gannon, was left in a child’s safety car seat in the back of her SUV when she went to work in Vero Beach in late July.

“It’s a tragedy,” her attorney has said. Adding that she is reminded everyday, as there are photos of Gannon around the house.

Metcalf said that she and her family are coping as best as could be expected and they have a large support group.
