Denizens of the Seagrass family outing at ELC

WABASSO ISLAND — The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) will host the season’s first event in its Family Outings program on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. until noon.  Along its 64-acre campus, participants of all ages will follow master naturalists into the seagrass beds of the Indian River Lagoon to discover their natural inhabitants.

Be prepared to get wet and wear sandals or other footwear for wading in the lagoon bottom on this adventure. Reservations for the $5 family event ($3 for ELC members) can be made by calling (772) 589-5050.

The denizens (“native inhabitants”) include seahorses, pipefish, shrimp, puffers and flounders along with a surprising number of watery neighbors.  The Indian River Lagoon is an important commercial and recreational resource for our community; discover it!

The Environmental Learning Center is located north of Vero Beach off County Road 510 at the western edge of the Wabasso Bridge.  Its 64-acre island campus includes exhibit areas, native plant gardens, picnic facilities, gift shop and visitor center.  A list of its many field excursions including hikes, boat excursions, nature walks and bird watching can be found at www.DiscoverELC.org.
