Large crowds turn out for Junior League Oktoberfest

VERO BEACH — The day was hot, but the beer was cold at the Junior League of Indian River Inaugural Oktoberfest, held Saturday at Historic Dodgertown’s MiLB Vero Beach Facility.  A steady stream of people flowed through the gate throughout the afternoon and early evening, drawn by activities and entertainment for the whole family.

According to Jean McGowan, vice president of fund development, “The Junior League was looking to create an event that would bring out a different demographic. We wanted an event that everyone could enjoy.”

The League has established a devoted following for its annual springtime Tour of Homes and has also had success with their Whale of a Sale fall fundraiser.  They decided this year to put the Whale of a Sale on hiatus in favor of the Oktoberfest. The event was pulled together in just over two months in hopes of luring younger people and families. Their plan definitely seems to have worked.

The Bier Garden was filled with Vero’s young professionals sampling an assortment of 35 different beers, and the little ones were kept busy with a Kinder Garden filled with bounce houses, games and animals from Busch Wildlife.  A professional costumed group from Orlando and a German band entertained the older crowd with music and dancing, and German food and crafts were also available.

The Junior League of Indian River is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action of trained volunteers. Funds raised at the event will help the League to support its numerous community oriented programs.  {igallery 49}
