EVENT: Celebrate Estuaries Day

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — What is an Estuary?  Learn about estuaries, including the one in your own backyard-the Indian River Lagoon, as the Florida Atlantic University, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce hosts two September events in honor of National Estuaries Day.Monday, Sept. 21, join Captain Chop Legé and a Harbor Branch scientist for a two-hour pontoon boat cruise on the Indian River, home to more kinds of animals and plants than any other estuary in North America.  Call (772) 465-2400 x 559 for information and reservations.  Space is limited!The events continue on Saturday, Sept. 26, with a  free National Estuaries Day celebration at the Harbor Branch Ocean Discovery Center located directly across from the main gate at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.  This family event will take place from 10 a.m .to 3 p.m. and will feature indoor and outdoor fun and activities including:• “Living Lagoon” Indian River Lagoon marine life displays• Hands-on Water Quality Exploration Station• Harbor Branch Scientist Meet-and-Greet• Eco-Boat tours of the Indian River (cost is $10 per person, space is limited)• Kids’ Arts and Crafts Table• Ocean Discovery Center interactive ocean science exhibits• Lagoon Information tables• Fun and Games, giveaways and prizes. Harbor Branch scientist gets lagoon monitoring grant

Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute's network of Indian River Lagoon water quality monitoring stations is about to expand and generate more data than ever before – thanks to a grant of more than $865,000 from the institute's fundraising foundation. According to Dr. Dennis Hanisak, a research professor and director of the Indian River Lagoon Observatory, the grant will fund construction and maintenance of three new LOBO stations in Brevard County to augment the 10 already dotting the lagoon between the St. Lucie Estuary and Sebastian Inlet. Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th. Environmental groups continue lagoon cleanup and education efforts

Even as much of Florida and the world have come to pretty much of a standstill due to COVID-19, local environmental and conservation organizations are still working to clean up the troubled Indian River Lagoon and educate school children and other members of the public about lagoon issues – all while maintaining social distancing. Ocean Research and Conservation Association is conducting its usual suite of environmental monitoring programs – maintaining its Kilroy network of water quality stations around the lagoon and doing other field work.
