Humane Society pet food bank open Sundays

VERO BEACH – The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVB & IRC) pet food bank will be open every Sunday in the shelter’s Adoption and Education Center.Food will be distributed from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. to Indian River County pet owners seeking assistance.

“Our goal is to keep pets and people together. For those families who are struggling to feed their pets, we’re hoping our food bank will achieve that goal,” Director of Customer and Volunteer Services Phaedra Kohler said. Pet food bank recipients are asked to bring a photo ID and fill out an application listing the number and type of animals in their home. Recipients can receive pet food for three months and may reapply to the program, if necessary.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association recently released its monthly report for the beaches at Jaycee Park, Humiston Park and South Beach Park. Community Development Department closes in-person services

The Community Development Department closed in-person services Monday as county officials implement more health precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Officials plan to add more physical barriers to the front counters inside the building, which already has temperature scanners installed. County employees and those who visit county facilities are already required to wear masks inside. County Administrator Jason Brown was not immediately available to confirm reports that six employees in the Community Development Department tested positive for the virus.
