Arrest made in theft of dingy, motor at Vero Beach marina

VERO BEACH – The Vero Beach Police Department arrested a man it says stole a dingy and an outboard motor from the Vero Beach Municipal Marina over the weekend.

Police arrested John Gallagher, 25, of 445 39th Court SW, Vero Beach, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, after an interview in which Gallagher admitted to stealing the boat and motor, according to police spokesman Officer John Morrison. The arrest reports states that shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, Gallagher was seen on surveillance video walking up and down the dock at the marina with a large black dog before untying the victim’s boat and paddling away.

On Monday, around 10:40 p.m., an office saw a man fitting the description of the subject in the video walking a large black dog on the marina’s property. When approached, the man – who was later identified as Gallagher – said he was just walking his dog.

The next day, Gallagher was called to the Vero Beach Police Department for further question, during which he told investigators that he stole the dingy and motor, according to the report.

Gallagher faces one charge of grand theft and is being held at the county jail on $2,500 bond.
