Early morning outage knocks out traffic lights, radios, power to fire station

VERO BEACH — According to reports heard on the police scanner, a power outage at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday knocked out traffic lights along Old Dixie Highway for over an hour and left Indian River County Fire Station 1 on backup power and first responders with limited radio communications. Police were dispatched to direct traffic at the intersections of Old Dixie Highway and 8th Steet, 12th Street and 16th Street.The problem was corrected at about 7:30 a.m. in regard to the station and the radios, but the traffic lights were still blinking red, indicating that drivers should treat the intersection as a 4-day stop.It is not known at this time what caused the outage.
