BLOG: Why visual journalists would rather be working

My in-laws do not believe I work for a living, I play.

They are absolutely right. My job is fun, exciting, and I’d rather be working than having a (haha) day off. I call it a (haha) day off because it’s not really a day off.

When I’m “working” I’m covering interesting events like the Red Bull Air Force shooting their 3-D movie, shooting under water hockey in the pool with the team, or driving around listening to the radio looking for feature art for VeroNews.com.

Now, when I have a day off, I am usually doing laundry and dishes and balancing the checkbook.

Working in a 24/7 newsroom environment is rather intense because the news doesn’t stop for dinner, birthdays or anniversaries. So when a journalist has a day off it’s usually spent catching up on the mundane events that are typically neglected.

So if you know a journalist and they tell you their day off is coming up and a smirk comes across their face just know it’s because they’re usually not going to be found at the beach. They will be at home with the smell of cleaning supplies hoping the phone rings to call them to another adventure.
