Sebastian decides against new $2.5M clubhouse

SEBASTIAN — Golfers at the Sebastian Municipal Golf Course won’t see a new clubhouse anytime soon. The Sebastian City Council recently decided to postpone moving forward on building a new clubhouse given the depressed economy.

“We’re not disappointed,” said Greg Gardner, the golf course’s director of golf.

The council had considered pushing up the timetable for building a new clubhouse to take advantage of lower construction prices. However, council members expressed concern over taking on $2.5 million worth of debt for the project.

Both Gardner and City Manager Al Minner said that the golf course, which is self-supported through user fees, would have been able to cover the debt payment.

Gardner said that the city had always thought to do something to improve the clubhouse sometime in 2012 or 2013. Whether or not that will happen now, remains to be seen.

“I have no idea,” Minner said of seeing the project come before the council again.

Gardner said that the city will continue to make repairs to the clubhouse as always. He added that the clubhouse will continue to be able to handle large banquets, tournaments, receptions and other activities.

“We can continue doing what we have been doing,” he said.
