Ruth Redstone Callahan, 94, Sebastian; member of pioneer family

Ruth Redstone Callahan, 94, of Sebastian, died July 2, 2009, at VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach. She was born in Olean, N.Y., and moved from her birthplace to Indian River County in 1925, becoming one of the area’s pioneer families. She was a 1933 graduate of Vero Beach High School. She retired from First Federal Savings & Loan, Vero Beach, after 20 years as head teller. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Vero Beach, for 60 years, holding numerous offices in its WSCS “Women’s Society” and often teaching Sunday school. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Nile. She was treasurer of the local AARP chapter. Survivors include her daughters, Joann S. Fletcher, of Vero Beach, Linda C. Teague, of Sebastian, and Paula C. Murariu, of Merritt Island; sisters, Irene Redstone, of Vero Beach, and Doris McAlister, of Palm Beach and North Carolina; brother, David Redstone, of Tallahassee; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Sherwood; her husband of 51 years, Paul J. Callahan; and brothers, Clarence Redstone, Ross Redstone, Kenneth Redstone, Howard Redstone, John Redstone, Ray Redstone and Paul Redstone. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice of Indian River County, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. July 10 at First United Methodist Church.
